Maya Blue: Ancient Color, New Visions offers a focused view of Maya art and its continued resonance today. Drawing from SAMA’s holdings of art from the ancient Americas – including works recently acquired from the collection of John M. and Kathi Oppenheimer – the exhibition highlights objects from Mesoamerica that illuminate how blue was utilized and conceived in ancient Maya visual culture. These works are placed in vibrant dialogue with contemporary works that speak to Maya blue’s continued significance today, underscoring the continued place of ancient Mesoamerican art and ideas in thinking through issues of our time.
